Kate Garraway has given a tough update on husband Derek Draper ahead of their family Christmas with their children.

It comes after the GMB presenter, 54, said that her husband is in a “terrible state” after becoming the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK.

Derek, also 54, contracted Covid in early 2020 and was hospitalised for a year before returning home and nevertheless has issues with mobility and being able to communicate.

Opening up about what Christmas would be like this year for the family – including their children Darcey (15) and Billy (12) – she told Woman’s Own magazine: “This year, we have got him home – and fingers crossed we can keep him home.

“Of course, he’s not going to be putting on his Santa costume going out with Darcey for a father-and-daughter Christmas shop or the same with Billy.

“None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it’s adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he’s here at all which we didn’t have at all last year and feared would never happen.”

Kate additional: “The dream would be to get Derek to Chorley At the moment, moving him is a big problem: it’s exhausting for him.

“If not, maybe the Drapers could come to us for a big gathering, Covid permitting. And certainly I’ll be seeing the Garraways but my oven is broken so I’m not sure anyone wants to come to me.”

Appearing on docks Morgan’s last ever Life Stories earlier this month, she said that contracting Covid at the beginning of 2020 had “devastated” Derek and that he has been affected “from the top of his head to the tip of his toe”.

She said: “It does feel as though I walked by a fiery furnace or fell down a rabbit hole. The world went dark and nevertheless looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, really.”

“Derek is thought to be the worst affected living Covid patient in the United Kingdom,” docks pointed out. “He spent 13 months in hospital – the longest stay of anyone who survived the disease. What has Covid done to your husband?”

“It’s devastated him,” she said. “From the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure that the inflammation did pass by the brain.

“He nevertheless can’t communicate, he nevertheless has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he’s in a terrible state. Look, he’s alive, docks.”
